Info | Former Governor of the Bank of Finland from 12 July 2004 to 12 July 2018, now chair of the IFRS Foundation Trustees overseeing the International Accounting Standards Board.
Touted as top candidate to replace Mario Draghi as European Central Bank President by 30 October 2019.
EARLY CAREER: In 1972, at 21 year's old, Liikanen became the youngest-ever candidate ever elected to the Finnish Parliament. At 30, he rose to become the youngest ever Secretary General of the Social Democratic Party (a/k/a, SDP; in Finnish, "Suomen sosialidemokraattinen puolue"), holding this position from 1981 to 1987.
REGULATORY FINANCE AND BANKING: After five years as a Parliamentary representative to the Bank of Finland, Liikanen was tapped Minister of Finance in 1987 under the Harri Holkeri coalition government. In spite of his youth and doubts over his seeming lack of practical experience in both monetary and budgetary affairs, his stay as Finance Minister was a successful one and cradled a long career in European monetary regulation and supervision; four years (1995 to 1999) as European Commissioner for Budget, Personnel and Administration; five years as European Commissioner for Industry Entrepeneurship and SMEs (1999 to 2004); and wearing three hats simultaneously from July 2004 to July 2018: Governor of the IMF for Finland, Governing Council of the European Central Bank, and Governor of the Bank of Finland.
