| Info | Carl Benjamin Nett, a lifelong Republican and native Kentuckian, was born and raised in Louisville but also spent a great deal of time in Nelson County – just outside of Bardstown, where his mom, the second youngest of thirteen children, grew up on a dirt farm in extreme poverty. His dad, the eldest of only twelve children, comes from a family with its lineage in Colesburg, Kentucky. Since before his birth, Carl’s parents have owned a farm in Hardin County, just outside of Elizabethtown. Carl’s childhood, therefore, was a mix of city and country life. He played touch football with neighborhood kids on paved urban streets and, conversely, spent summers cutting tobacco and putting up hay. His parents own that farm still, and are spending their golden years raising beef cattle. Carl spent a good portion of his childhood in another Kentucky town – Frankfort. His dad, a former State Representative, served in the General Assembly for ten terms as a Democrat.
In addition to their love of farming, Carl’s parents are retired Jefferson County public school teachers and former small business owners. The eldest of four, Carl has two brothers serving as police officers with the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department and a sister working out of state as an accomplished business professional. Carl and his Connecticut-born wife, Kate, married in 2010 at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, D.C., site of President Kennedy’s 1963 requiem mass, and are now proud parents of two.
Carl left the Commonwealth shortly after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, when hired by the U.S. Secret Service. He graduated first in class from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia, New Mexico and first in class from the U.S. Secret Service Academy in Beltsville, Maryland. With assignments to the Dignitary Protective Division and the Presidential Protective Division, Carl traveled the country and the globe protecting our President and various dignitaries and world leaders.
In 2008, Carl resigned his commission when recruited onto a contract with the Central Intelligence Agency. Working within the CIA’s National Clandestine Service, he underwent extensive training at the facility known as “The Farm” and volunteered for hazardous duty assignment in Afghanistan. In Bagram, Carl worked with Special Operations Forces to develop actionable intelligence for capture/kill raids against al Qaeda, Taliban, and associated groups. In 2011, he was asked by the Pentagon to lead a specialized unit at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. There, Carl came face-to-face with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the so-called “mastermind” of 9/11 and the terrorist personally responsible for the execution beheading of American journalist Daniel Pearl.
