InfoWhile not as large and renowned as the New York Police Department, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department plays a major role in providing safety and security throughout the New York metropolitan region.

Never was that more evident than on September 11, 2001, when two hijacked airliners crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. On that fateful day, the Port Authority police lost 37 men and women in the line of duty – the largest one-day loss of life suffered by any police force in the nation.

Now, three years later, Samuel J. Plumeri Jr. (Rider ‘77, law enforcement) has taken the reins of the nearly 1,700-strong Port Authority police. Plumeri was promoted from deputy superintendent of intelligence and training to director of public safety/superintendent of police by the Port Authority on April 22. He officially took over as head of the police force on May 1, upon the resignation of Charles D. De Rienzo, who left the Port Authority to become deputy commissioner for administration with the New York Police Department.

“Obviously, it’s a humbling experience,” said Plumeri on being named to head the Port Authority police force. “It is a job that carries a huge amount of responsibility.”

The Port Authority, which owns the World Trade Center site, is charged with protecting the key gateways to the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. The agency’s police force is responsible for protecting and securing the area’s three international airports (John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports in New York, and Newark Liberty in New Jersey), bridges, tunnels, bus and marine terminals, and the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) train system.

Plumeri, 57, was influential in the hiring of nearly 550 new officers who have joined the agency’s police force since 9/11. The current number of Port Authority police officers and commanders is the highest in the agency’s history.

“Since 9/11, we’ve taken a very aggressive posture towards counterterrorism activities,” said Plumeri.

Plumeri, who is responsible for the management of about 1,700 officers, commanders and civilian staff in the Port Authority Police Department and the safety and security of all of the agency’s facilities, has spent 34 years in law enforcement. He began his career with the Trenton Police Department, serving as a patrolman and as a major crimes and organized crime intelligence detective. Plumeri, who was an undercover detective for 10 years while assigned to the Special Services Unit, later served 12 years as sheriff of Mercer County.

“Sam Plumeri has a wealth of law enforcement experience, which allows the Port Authority to continue its important mission of ensuring the safety and security of nearly 450,000 people who use its facilities each year,” said Anthony R. Coscia, chairman of the agency. “He started his law enforcement career walking a beat on the streets of Trenton, and then helped lead Mercer County’s law enforcement efforts as sheriff. Now he will help lead the fine men and women who protect the gateways to the New York/New Jersey metropolitan region.”

Plumeri resides in Hamilton, NJ, with his wife, Barbara. His mother, Josephine Vaccaro Plumeri, turns 90 years old in July.
