MacDonald Gallion was born April 5, 1913, at Montgomery, son of Dr. Thomas Travis and Varina Ann (George) Gallion, of Marengo County; grandson of Joe and Stacia Ann (Russell) Gallion and of Dr. James H. and Ida (Nelms) George, of Linden, the former serving in the Alabama House of Representatives from Marengo County in the session of 1890. The ancestry is predominantly English. They came first in 1785 and settled in Maryland and moved to Alabama from South Carolina.

Mr. Gallion attended Lakeview Grammar School, Paul Hyne and Phillips High Schools in Birmingham. He attended the University of Alabama 1931-1937 receiving the Bachelor of Laws degree the latter year. He has practiced law since 1937. He served as a special council for the State of Alabama in the Phenix City trials and was Chief Assistant Attorney General in the office of John Patterson, 1955-1959, and was elected Attorney General for the 1959-1963 term. In 1962 he ran unsuccessfully for Governor of Alabama. In 1966, he was again elected Attorney General for the 1967-1971 term. Mr. Gallion served in the U.S. Marine Corps 1942-45 as a 1st Lt., 4th Marine Division, 24th Regiment, 3rd Bn., seeing combat service in the Central Pacific and being wounded at Saipan. He is a Democrat, Presbyterian, Mason, and member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Woodmen of the World, Elks, and Alpha Tau Omega social fraternity.

Married: July 10, 1942, at Oneonta, Velma Lee, daughter of J.B. and Carrie (George) Biddy, of Montevallo and Birmingham. Mrs. Gallion's ancestors were English, who moved first to Georgia, thence to Alabama. Children: 1. Thomas Travis, III m. Elizabeth Lancaster Goodwyn; 2. Frances Mallory m. Joe Bear, Jr.
