| Info | Led protests of Kosovo Albanians against the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1981, fleeing to Switzerland in 1989. Continued to agitate remotely, helping launch the Kosovo Liberation Army in 1996. Became Supreme Commander of the newly-formed National Liberation Army which joined the Macedonian Conflict upon his return in 2001. Led the Army in battling the Republic of Macedonia's security forces until peace was restored with the Ohrid Agreement, signed by all warring factions on August 13, 2001.
Created a party (the Democratic Union for Integration, or DUI) in Macedonia and made its president in 2002. The DUI has been a junior partner of the current government in Macedonia since 2008.
