| Info | Diane Allen is known by many titles: corporate President, working mother, pilot, sharpshooter, daredevil hang-glider (1973 National Champion), Emmy-winning TV news journalist, Quaker Sunday School teacher, and now, member of the New Jersey State Legislature.
A resident of Burlington County for nearly 50 years, Diane graduated from Bucknell University with a degree in Philosophy. While there, she founded a swim team, which she then led to the AAU Nationals.
Diane's broadcasting career set in motion in 1970, when she began doing public service programming on WJJZ Radio in Mt. Holly, and within one year she became a news reporter, and later news director. Next she joined the staff at New Jersey Network as a reporter, eventually becoming the station's news anchor. In 1976, she joined KYW-TV, the local NBC affiliate, to host a weekly women's program. Soon she was promoted to noon anchor and later given her own daily talk show.
Diane earned two Emmy Awards and a national Clarion Award for her reporting while working for ABC in Chicago, where she moved in 1979. She returned to KYW in 1982. After seven years serving the station as primary anchor, producer and reporter of major news stories and documentaries, she moved across town to the CBS-owned station, WCAU-TV. During those twelve years in Philadelphia, she accumulated four more Emmy's and numerous other awards and ultimately was made an Executive Producer, in addition to her other duties.
In 1994, after standing up to CBS for discriminatory practices, and having the government find in her favor, Diane left the station to work full-time in her own media production company.
Today, she is President of Vidcomm in Burlington, where she and her staff produce broadcast documentaries as well as promotional and training videos for a variety of clients, including corporate and not-for-profit groups. She also does media training and corporate teleconferencing.
In 1995, Diane was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly where she served on the Law and Public Safety and Labor Committees. In 1996, Diane was appointed Chairperson of the Assembly Advisory Council on Women.
Diane was elected to the New Jersey State Senate in November of 1997 and, in January of 1998, began a four-year term. During the 2000-2001 session she sponsored over 400 bills and had more bills signed into law than any other legislator. As a state senator, Diane continues to serve her constituency and champion solutions to the toughest issues that face New Jerseyans today. This year Diane has been appointed to the Senate leadership position of Republican Conference Leader and is a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Human Services & Senior Citizens and the Senate Transportation Committee. Diane has also recently been named Chairwoman of the Technology Task, and as a member of The Commission on Business Efficiency of the Public Schools.
In March '98 the senator was appointed to New Jersey's Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission.
Since 1982, Diane has served on the Board of Directors for the Family Service of Burlington County and from 1984 to 1991, on the Philadelphia Committee for the Homeless Board of Directors. She has also served on the Boards of the Foster Care Consortium of New Jersey, the Habitat for Humanity Community Advisory, the United Way, the American Heart Association, the Youth Work Committee, the NJ State Aquarium, the Moorestown Visiting Nurses Association, the Union League, the Philadelphia Flower Show and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.
Diane Allen has received a myriad of awards for her efforts in public service, including Legislator of the Year from the Policeman's Benevolent Association (2000), the NJ Association for the Mentally Ill (1999) and the US Jewish War Veterans (1999). The NJ State Federation of Colored Women's Clubs, Inc. named her the "Outstanding Woman of 1998" and the Marine Corps League designated Diane "1999 Lady of the Year".
She has received the Humanitarian Award from the American Cancer Society, the Patriotism Award from the Catholic War Veterans, the Patriotic Service Commendation from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Community Service Award from the United Way. The American Family Institute gave Diane the "Family Inspiration Award" and the Displaced Homemakers Network of New Jersey, Inc. designated Diane the recipient of the award for Outstanding Contributions to Women and Families. In 1999, Diane was also appointed "Advocate of the Year" by the NJ Small Business Association, as well as the Rotary Award "For the Public Trust and Confidence She has Earned".
Diane and her husband Sam raised their two children, Sara and Leeds, in Burlington County. Currently Sara is following in her mother's footsteps as a Broadcast Journalist and Leeds is an electrical engineer.
