Born in Kellysville TX on 10/20/1908, son of itinerant Methodist minister.

Began his music career by winning a yodeling contest in 1929 and then cutting four records in Camden NJ.

In 1931, he began his "Cowboy Joe" radio show.

"I try to write music with a spiritual uplift instead of a moral downbeat."

"Having written a song like 'It Is No Secret' and some of those other serious things means a lot more to me than anything else I have done...I would rather have written that song than be President of the United States."

1949--first major country & western hit with "But I'll Be Chasin' Women"

Also had a spiritual awakening at a Billy Graham revival; Hamblen swore off alcohol and horse racing immediately

Gave up his $1,000 per week radio show because it would not reject beer advertising

1954--signed by RCA Victor in June

1954--first release on RCA Victor "This Ole House"

1971--Cowboy Church returns to radio
