InfoSteve Pestka’s values – respect for hard work, fairness, opportunity for all – were shaped by his family roots and West Michigan upbringing.

In 1946, Steve’s father Henry moved to Grand Rapids from Poland – not knowing any English, and not having much money – after surviving Nazi concentration camps during World War II. With the help of others in a nation that offered opportunity for all, Henry Pestka was able to grow a successful business in Grand Rapids, teaching valuable lessons to his son about the reward for hard work and the importance of service to community. Henry married Beatrice and their first son was Steve, born in 1952.

Steve graduated from East Grand Rapids High School. After attending Grand Rapids Community College (then GRJC), Steve graduated from the University of Michigan -- the first person in his family to graduate college. Steve received his law degree at Detroit College of Law in 1978 and served as an as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Kent County.

In 1990, Steve married Alicia McNees, a Grand Rapids Catholic school principal. After the birth of his son Nate in 1992, Steve devoted himself to public service, inspired to contribute by the example of his father. Steve won his first election for Kent County Board of Commissioners in 1992, and eventually served three terms. In 1998, Steve was elected for his first of two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives, where he served as Minority Vice Chair on the House Community Colleges Appropriations Subcommittee.

Praised at the time as “fair, hard-working, intelligent, balanced and full of integrity,” Steve was appointed as a Judge of the 17th Circuit Court in Kent County in 2003 and was reelected in 2004. In 2009, Steve left the Court to help his father run the family business.

Today, Steve lives in Cascade Township with his wife Alicia.
