| Info | Lois Combs Weinberg, founder of the Hindman Settlement School's Dyslexia Program, is known throughout Kentucky for her work in education. Lois, the daughter of Governor Bert T. Combs, is a native of Eastern Kentucky. She attended Randolph Macon Women's College in Virginia, where she majored in biology and religion. Shortly after marrying her husband, Bill Weinberg, Lois returned to Kentucky, settled in Knott County and taught family life as part of the Upward Bound Program at Alice Lloyd College. Lois's interest in public education was sparked in the late 1970's when she learned that her first son was dyslexic. At that time, there were no programs in the public schools to meet her son's educational needs. Lois, therefore, started her own program. She and four other parents began tutoring at the Hindman Settlement School. This tutorial program developed into a full time program at the James Still Learning Center and has now helped thousands of dyslexic students and their families throughout Eastern Kentucky. Lois has served as secretary of the Hindman Settlement School's Board of Directors since the early 80's.
In recognition of her extensive efforts to assist students with special needs achieve their goals, Lois has been appointed to several statewide educational initiatives. In 1990, she was elected chairwoman of the prestigious Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence after serving on the Committee since its origin in 1980. Lois was also appointed by the Governor to the University of Kentucky's Board of Trustees in 1992 where she served as secretary until 1997. In 1997, at the Governor's request, Lois accepted a seat on the newly created Council on Postsecondary Education, where she served as Vice-Chair. Lois has also been the recipient of several awards including the East Kentucky Leadership Foundation's Private Citizen's Service Award and the Berea College Service Award. In 1986, Lois was named by the State Department of Education as one of the ten state's outstanding school volunteers and was named the "Person of the Year" in Knott County in 1987. The Lexington Women's Center recognized Lois' contributions in 1995. She was presented the Earl Wallace Memorial Award in 1997 and Morehead University's Appalachian Woman of the Year Award in 2000.
For more than thirteen years, while raising her three sons, Lois Combs Weinberg managed her family's natural gas business out of her home. Lois had a number of different partnerships to deal with, several small consumer companies, and various gas wells that her family had been involved with over the years. She had well tenders to supervise, forms to fill out, issues involving workers' compensation and liability insurance, regulatory matters to address and all of the other issues that small businesspeople face on a daily basis. Lois says the experience was invaluable because it familiarized her intimately with the problems that small businesses encounter. In 1991, Lois incorporated an umbrella company to manage the partnerships, her oldest son now runs the company and it has become a successful business employing a dozen people.
She and her husband Bill have three sons Jed, Zachary and Tomas, a daughter-in-law, Tracey, and a granddaughter, Carley. In 1996 Lois attended Harvard University's School of Education, from which she received a M. Ed in 1997. Lois was born on December 18, 1943 in Lexington, Kentucky.
