Info | Clarence Martin Stafford
Owner/operator of the Stafford Printing Co for 50 years, was a Denver councilman for 20 years in the 1940s and 1950s and served three terms in the Colorado Legislature.
In 1950, Stafford lost the race for Colorado secretary of state and was again defeated in 1951 in his campaign against Denver Mayor Quigg Newton.
Seven years later, Stafford and another man were fined $500 and put on a year's probation for printing and mailing a religious smear leaflet attacking two local Catholic politicians.
Under federal law, their crime was failing to sign the leaflets rather than smearing the politicians.
In 1971, six years after retiring from the printing business, Stafford made a final, unsuccessful bid for an at-large seat on the Denver council.
