InfoMy name is Bert Smith. I am a candidate for the United States House of Representatives from the Fifth District of Oklahoma.

My wife, Carol and I have lived here in Northwest Oklahoma City for 16 years. We were both born at St. Anthony Hospital and have lived in Oklahoma all our lives. We have five grown children and six very exceptional grandchildren.

My education includes a BS Degree from Oklahoma State University in agricultural economics and an MBA (Finance) from Oklahoma City University. I have successfully completed the first of three evaluations in pursuit of the professional designation as a Chartered Financial Analyst.

I am employed as a math teacher by Oklahoma City Public Schools, having taught recently at a hospital day treatment center, a middle school, and an alternative school. I am currently taking an unpaid leave of absence from my teaching position to seek this office. Earlier in my career, my father and I owned and managed a small business, a farm supply store and grain elevator in Western Oklahoma. I also worked as an agricultural credit administrator for a large financial institution in Oklahoma City.

In 1997, I retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving 28 years in the army reserve. In 1971-72, I served in combat in the Republic of Viet Nam as a helicopter pilot, lift section leader, and assistant S2 with the 3/17 Air Cavalry Squadron. My military career included being honor graduate of my Infantry Officer Basic Class, five years with the 95th MTC, graduation from the Armys Command and General Staff College, and 10 years as an Admissions Field Representative for the United States Military Academy at West Point.
