U.S. Senator (TN) 1825-1840. Elected as a Jacksonian, broke with the President in 1831 and resigned 1/13/1840 because he would not comply with instructions from the Tennessee legislature.
President pro tempore of the Senate during the Twenty-second and Twenty-third Congresses; chairman, Committee on Indian Affairs (Twentieth through Twenty-sixth Congresses). White read his letter of resignation on the floor of the Senate on 1/13/1840 [newspaper Farmer's Cabinet, 1/24/1840].

One of four Whig candidates for US President, 1836

Was nominated for Presidential Elector at the head of the Whig Ticket (Harrison & Tyler), 2/1840 [New Bedford Mercury, 2/21/1840]

Died of consumption in Knoxville TN 4/10/1840 [New Bedford Mercury, 4/24/1840]; interment in First Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
