Career
I earned a PhD in molecular genetics, and after doing post-doctoral research at Stanford, I started a biotech company for which I raised three rounds of funding.
My scientific training makes me well suited for quickly getting up to speed on issues, breaking them down, and finding the most reasonable solutions; and my business experience means that I know how to manage a campaign and ultimately an office and staff as your Representative.
Family
My wife, Mignon (known to the world as Grammar Girl), and I have been married for more than 25 years and she is my partner. Having her in my life has not only made me a better person, but also makes me want to be a better person. She worked behind the scenes supporting me while I was starting and running my company, and after the company bought me out in 2003, I gladly reciprocated and started working behind the scenes in support of her company. We also moved that year to be close to my family, but after giving life in the Phoenix suburbs a chance for three years, Mignon was done with the famous Arizona summers. In 2006, we moved from Arizona to Reno because we also had family here, and we fell in love with Nevada.
Politics
We both agree that it's now time for me to step forward again to try to make a difference for Nevada and for our country. As you’ll see in the “Beliefs” section, I support progressive policies that will benefit Nevadans.
In the bigger picture, like so many of you, I have been appalled by the intentional cruelty of our government’s recent policies and by the resurgence of white supremacy and discrimination of all kinds. America has always stood up to bullies and tyrants and defended those without adequate means of defending themselves. Keeping in mind all the real heroes who have sacrificed so much for America’s founding principles, I feel called to stand up for a fair and compassionate America.
