InfoDavid is a Salt Lake County native. He graduated from Granite High School and the University of Utah College of Business, and received his Juris Doctor from the University of Utah College of Law in 1965. He has practiced law in Salt Lake County for the last 37 years and is admitted to practice in the United States District Court, the Tenth Circuit Court and the United States Supreme Court. He served as an assistant District Attorney from 1970 to 1972, and as Deputy Salt Lake County Attorney from 1972 to 1979. David was in private practice from 1979 to 1986 and was elected in 1986 to the office of Salt Lake County Attorney, and re-elected to that office in 1990. He served as the Capital Case Coordinator in the office of the Utah Attorney General from 1995 to 1998 handling all post-conviction actions filed by death row inmates.

David was elected in November of 1998 to a four-year term as the District Attorney for Salt Lake County. He now serves as the county and district attorney for Salt Lake County, as the two offices merged in to the District Attorney's office in 1997.

As Salt Lake County District Attorney, David serves as both the legal advisor for the county and as the chief prosecutor for the state of Utah for all felony, juvenile and misdemeanor offenses committed in Salt Lake County. The office has 200 employees, including 81 attorneys, 11 investigators and 19 paralegals.

David currently serves as the chairman of the Advisory Board of the Statewide Association of Prosecutors. In addition, he serves as a Board member of both the Utah Prosecution Council and the National Distict Attorneys' Association, and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice, and the Third District Victim Rights Committee. David is a past chairman of the Criminal Law section of the Utah State Bar Association, and has also served as co-chairperson of the Advisory Board for the Salt Lake Children's Justice Center. He has served for 10 years on the National District Attorney's Association Board of Directors, and was chairman of two Salt Lake County Jail committees.

Daivd and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four grown sons and have five grandchildren.
