InfoErik Bohen, a lifelong resident of South Buffalo, attended St. Martin’s Elementary School and graduated from Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary and Special Education from St. Bonaventure University and a Master of Science degree in Special Education from Canisius College.
Erik has been a special education teacher in the Buffalo Public School District for the past 13 years, engaging in numerous school involvement activities. In the spring of 2009, Erik and his colleagues from Hamlin Park School 74 organized a road race/walk for a student in their school with a rare form of cancer. The “Run for Raquan” raised over $8,000 to support this child’s care. Erik also serves as an after-school teacher for students on medical leave and has been a supportive mentor for many youths in the community. Erik currently teaches Special Education Kindergarten at Lorraine Elementary Public School #72.
As the head coach of Mount Mercy Academy’s Cross Country and Track Teams for six years, Erik and the assistant coaches led the Mount Mercy Cross Country team in their quest for the Monsignor Martin League and All Catholic Champion Awards in 2004. In 2017, Erik returned to coaching as the assistant coach for Bishop Timon-St. Jude’s Cross Country team.
Erik was instrumental in forming the Jack Donohue Memorial Race, in honor of the late Mount Mercy running coach, serving as co-chair of the committee for five years. Proceeds from “Jack’s 5K” supported many girls with scholarships to the school. Through the committee’s efforts, the running track at Southside Elementary School is named in honor of the beloved coach. In 2010, Erik was recognized by the race committee through the Mount Mercy 5K Community Service Award. The race is still carried on today as the Mount Mercy 5K. Erik was honored in 2014 by Mount Mercy Academy again in receiving the Spirit of Mercy Award.
As one of the organizers of the Ryan Purcell Memorial Run, Erik has supported Ryan’s family in establishing the Ryan Purcell Foundation in honor of the late Ryan Purcell, a fine young citizen. The Foundation provides scholarships to high school graduates to support their college studies. Erik received the “Tim O’Neil Good Samaritan Award” by the race committee in 2017 for his efforts in the community and for those in need.
Erik was also actively involved in organizing the Timon Fall Challenge 5K Race. This event has generated the funds to provide scholarships to incoming freshman at Bishop Timon-St. Jude. In 2009, Erik received the Tom Sands Community Service Award from Bishop Timon-St. Jude. To raise funds to benefit the school’s music department, Erik co-chaired the South Buffalo Reunion in 2011 and 2012. In 2014, Erik was honored by the Hillery Memorial Foundation. The foundation provides scholarships for students at Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School.
Erik has been the recipient of Goin’ South’s Annual Irishman of the Year Civic Pride Award, which recognized his numerous efforts to support and promote the community.
Honored for his support of students, their families and the community, Erik was named one of Business First’s “40 under 40” awardees in November 2012.
Erik has committed his efforts to expand his school and community involvement by assisting many elected officials.
Erik Bohen is proud to be a Buffalonian and continues to be actively involved in service to the community.
