| Info | Linn County Supervisor James M. Houser represents District 1. He has served as a Linn County Supervisor in 1990, 1993 - 2010, and 2014 to the present.
Jim first served the office when he was appointed to fill a vacancy on the board in 1990. He was then elected to office in 1992 and served four consecutive at large four-year terms. In 2008, he was elected in District 5 to a two-year term to start the staggered terms of the five-member board by districts. In 2014, he was elected to a four-year term as supervisor for District 1. Jim will be running for re-election in 2018 to the new three-member board, which was changed by voters in 2016.
Jim has served as board liaison to all Linn County departments. He currently serves on the boards for the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency, Area Ambulance, and Iowa Workforce Development CEO board. Jim also serves on the Highway 30 Coalition, Emergency Management Agency Commission board, and is the Linn County Board's representative to the Veterans Commission and Linn County Conservation Department.
Jim was involved in protecting Linn County infrastructure during the floods of 2008 and 2016. He also assisted in the rebuilding of county structures after the flood of 2008, including the Linn County Courthouse, Sheriff's Office, Jail, Juvenile Justice Center, Community Services Building, and the Jean Oxley Public Service Center.
Jim is involved in the planning of the Percy and Lileah Harris Public Health Building and with raising the minimum wage in Linn County that was overturned by the Iowa State Legislature. One of his priorities is working on a Linn County opiate addiction task force with the goal of reducing deaths from opiate overdose.
On the state level, Jim is involved with the Iowa State Association of Counties (ISAC) and has served on various committees with the group. He is regularly at the state capital lobbying the legislature on issues important to county government.
On the national level, Jim represents Linn County on the National Association of Counties (NACO), Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee, and is involved in lobbying the federal legislative delegation each year at the NACO legislative conference.
Jim is a native Cedar Rapidian and is an active member of the Linn County community. He is a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church, a six-year past board member of the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library, past Jefferson Band Parent member, a 45-year member of the Sheet Metal Local 263 and a 31-year member of the Antique Automobile Club of America-Cedar Rapids Region. Jim also serves as a Linn County Reserve Deputy Sheriff with 38 years of service and is 15-year member of the United States Selective Service Board serving Linn County.
Jim is married to Dr. Arleen Zahn-Houser, a family physician practicing at Mercy Care Marion in Marion. She also serves Linn County as Deputy Linn County Medical Examiner. The Housers have four children - Amy, Scott, Brent and Brooke.
