InfoScott Summers has been an attorney for over thirty years. A sole practitioner since 1989, he concentrates in probate, with a particular emphasis in guardianship. In addition to his law degree from Northern Illinois University, Summers holds an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management and a liberal arts degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Recognizing his ability and experience with guardianship law, the American Bar Association asked Scott to write a “how-to” book on the subject. Guardianship and Conservatorship: A Handbook for Lawyers was published by the ABA in 1996.

The ABA subsequently requested Summers to co-author a volume on advance health care directives, living wills, powers of attorney, and related documents. Advance Health Care Directives: A Handbook for Professionals appeared in 2002.

In January, 2013, Summers was appointed by the governor of Illinois as the public guardian of McHenry County. State senators voted to confirm him that May. Under court supervision, and often on a last resort basis, Scott steps in and helps in instances when a person becomes unable to make personal or financial decisions. More information is available at www.McHenryPublicGuardian.org

In addition to his work as public guardian, Mr. Summers serves concurrently as the public administrator of McHenry County. This involves service as a court-appointed representative when a person with assets dies and there is no relative or friend to come forward with their attorney to manage the money and property. Please see www.McHenryPublicAdministrator.org for details.

Over the years, Summers has been active in civic matters. Between 2005 and 2009, he was an elected trustee at McHenry County College and, for a brief period, chaired the board. Scott was a member of the Board of Visitors of NIU’s College of Law between 1997 and 2004. During the 1980s, he was treasurer for three nonprofits: Harvard Community Memorial Hospital, Hospice for McHenry County, and a church in Woodstock, IL. Before becoming a lawyer, Summers worked as an executive in the public sector.

A board member of the Illinois Guardianship Association since 2015, Mr. Summers has been awarded designation as a National Certified Guardian (NCG) by the Center for Guardianship Certification. He presently is a member of the American, Illinois, and McHenry County Bar Associations.

A former resident of Chicago, Evanston, WIlmette, and Oak Park, Scott and his wife (and a bevy of creatures) live on a small farm in rural Harvard, just six miles south of the Wisconsin state line.
