| Info | The Sattgast family came to South Dakota during the 1930�s when Rich�s grandfather, Charlie Sattgast accepted the position of President at Sioux Falls College during the Great Depression. Rich�s parents, Larry and Marcella Sattgast, moved the family to Madison, South Dakota, where his father taught at Dakota State College until 1972 when the family moved to Spearfish, South Dakota.
Rich graduated from Spearfish High School and later earned his B.S. in Political Science and Business Administration at Black Hills State University, where his father was a long time instructor and his mother was the High School secretary.
After High School, Sattgast joined the U.S. Army where he spent 18 years in the military, including being stationed as part of the Occupation Force in Berlin in the 1980�s, Desert Storm in the 1990�s, and the South Dakota National Guard in the new Millennium.
After Desert Storm, Rich moved out-of-state to work on his Masters in Public Administration in the field of Public Affairs, Political and Governmental Processes at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico. While there, Rich served as the Peace Corps Campus Coordinator for Minority Relations. Upon completing his coursework with a GPA of 4.0, Rich was inducted The Honor Society of Phi Kapa Phi, and was accepted to receive a position with the Presidential Management Internship (PMI) program. However at the age of thirty, Rich decided he valued his family and the South Dakota way of life more than a PMI position in D.C. or New York and returned home to a position with the Secretary of State.
Rich�s interest in politics grew from his family�s involvement in the community and a sense of commitment to this county. Aside from acting as the Association of County Officials� Lobbyist, Sattgast�s political experience includes serving in the Legislature as a Legislative Intern and later as a Lobbyist Intern. He is a past member of the College and Young Republicans, acted as a military liaison to the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait for the Commander of the U.S. Armed Forces in Kuwait, and assisted with President George Bush�s Election Campaign in 1992 as West River Coordinator for the campaign. In addition to volunteering for numerous other state and local campaigns, Rich has also taken an active role in civic and community activities by being a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and Rotary. In college, Rich headed up several fundraisers for local people in need, and continues to work for the people of South Dakota.
Sattgast served as director for the SD Association of County Officials for the six years prior to becoming State Auditor. With the Association of County Officials, he has served our County Auditors, Registers of Deeds, and Treasurers. He now serves South Dakota and it�s citizenry in the Office of State Auditor.
As State Auditor, Sattgast works to be the watchdog of the public dollars and through his experience with the Legislature, he assists all State agencies to better serve the public of South Dakota. Having a fiscally conservative philosophy, Sattgast watches every penny like it was Gold.
Sattgast, along with his wife Donna, resides in Pierre, and they have four children (Tony, Kim, Ashley and Chase).
