Born and raised in Burbank, California. Paul Graber graduated from John Burroughs High School in 1975. Paul volunteered as a youth basketball coach for the City of Burbank from 1975 until 1978, and he also worked as a part-time Special Activities Leader for Burbank’s Parks and Recreation Department for 13 years. He received his Associate in Arts Degree from Los Angeles Valley College in 1978, and he graduated from San Diego State University in 1981 with a degree in political science and a minor in Spanish. While attending San Diego State University he served as the student coordinator for the Dan Finnegan for State Senate campaign in 1980.

After receiving his California State Teaching Credential in 1984 from California State University, Northridge, Paul became a teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District. He worked as a Social Studies teacher at Van Nuys Junior High School for six years where he served as the Leadership Coordinator, Assistant Youth Services Coordinator and was a member of School-Based Management.

Paul has taught at James Monroe High School since 1990. A faculty member of its prestigious Law and Government Magnet, Paul has served in a variety of positions at that school: Leadership Coordinator, assistant senior class advisor, junior varsity and varsity basketball coach, junior varsity softball coach, and the Social Studies Department Cochairman. Currently he coaches the girl’s varsity softball team and serves as the faculty advisor to the Jewish Students Union. In 1993, the Los Angeles Times named him High School Basketball Coach of the Year. Paul has worked with UCLA, Pepperdine University, and CSUN as a master teacher training six future teachers. In 1996 and 1997 he received the Mayor’s Certificate of Commendation as one of Los Angeles’s most inspirational teachers. The University of San Diego honored him in 2000 as a Teacher Recognition Program Recipient for outstanding educators, and he has been nominated five times in the last eight years for Who’s Who of American Teachers.

Residents of Stevenson Ranch, Paul and his family are members of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. His wife Michelle teaches at Lassen Elementary School also in North Hills. They have two children, Alexis and Jonathan. Six-year-old Alexis attends Pico Canyon Elementary School in Stevenson Ranch, and four-year-old Jonathan attends Sunshine Preschool and Learning Center in Valencia.
