| Info | J.B. Buxton has spent his career in education. As the son of a high school English teacher and career educator, J.B. grew up in education and has been involved ever since. As a Morehead Scholar at Chapel Hill, a high school English teacher and coach, as an education advisor in the White House and to Governor Easley, and as a public school parent, J.B. has kept a steadfast commitment to ensuring true education opportunity for all children.
J.B. attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a Morehead Scholarship. While at UNC-Chapel Hill, J.B. taught at the University of Western Cape in South Africa and led an education scholarship committee for students in South Africa. J.B. received his master�s degree in public policy from Princeton University on a Robertson Scholarship. While at Princeton, J.B. tutored in an inner-city public school.
Prior to his candidacy for the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, J.B. Buxton served as the Senior Education Advisor to Governor Mike Easley. In that capacity, he led the Governor�s Education Office and advised Governor Easley on educational issues in the K-12 public schools and higher education. As Education Advisor, Buxton spearheaded initiatives to create the Gates Foundation-funded NC New Schools Project to reform high schools, the NC Center for Afterschool Programs, and the NC School Report Card. He has also helped implement Governor Easley�s agenda to start the More at Four Prekindergarten Program, reduce class size in the early grades, start the Governor�s Teacher Working Conditions Initiative, expand the New Century Scholars program in western North Carolina, increase teacher pay, and secure need-based financial aid for college students.
Prior to joining the Governor, J.B. served as the Legislative Director for the State Board of Education, where he managed the State Board�s legislative agenda with the NC General Assembly and the U.S. Congress. Before that he was an education advisor in the White House under President Clinton where he focused on K-12 public education as a part of the White House Fellows Program.
J.B. began his career as a high school English teacher and coach in football, wrestling and baseball. He then went on to work for the Public School Forum as the Director of Special Programs with the N.C. Teaching Fellows Program, where he worked with Fellows and faculty on the fourteen campuses across the state. J. B. was then tapped to become the Policy and Research Director for the Public School Forum. J.B. has also worked as a consultant with the Southeast Center for Teaching Quality, the Afterschool Corporation in New York, and the Institute on Educational Governance at Columbia University.
J.B. has served as the chair of the board of the NC Center for Afterschool Programs and is a board member of the Public School Forum, N.C. New Schools Project, N.C. Center for Science, Math and Technology Education, Teach for America N.C., and the N.C. Business Committee for Education.
In the community, J.B. is a youth soccer coach, member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, board member of the Courthouse Kids Center in Wake County, and a school volunteer. J.B. has also served as a youth mentor with the Wake County Communities in School program and received an award from the Wake County Commissioners for his efforts.
J.B. is married to Hunter Brown Buxton. They have three children. Hunter is from Concord, N.C. and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She most recently worked at the Bonner Foundation as a program officer in the Bonner Scholars Program. Before that, she worked with UNC Public Television, where she raised money from in-state corporations to support UNC-TV and hosted a show focused on high school issues.
