InfoMatt Brown grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, in a family that stressed the importance of community/public service from an early age. After graduating from Columbia University in 1993, he returned to Providence to help found City Year Rhode Island. As Executive Director of City Year Rhode Island from 1995 to 1998, Brown built a statewide organization that annually puts more than 70 diverse young people to work each year in full-time community service.

Brown left City Year in 1998 to attend Yale Law School, from which he graduated in 2001. While at Yale, he founded the Democracy Compact, a voter education program that dramatically increased voter participation in Rhode Island in 2000. The Democracy Compact is now known as Vote For America. Both Vote For America and City Year are seen as model programs and have expanded across the country.

Brown currently serves on the boards of a number of Rhode Island and national organizations, including City Year Rhode Island, Festival Ballet, the National Conference for Community and Justice in Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Service Alliance, New Haven Academy, Rhode Islanders Sponsoring Education, United Way of Southeastern New England and WaterFire Providence.

In the November 2002 election, his first campaign for public office, Matt Brown was elected Secretary of State of Rhode Island with 68.8% of the vote. He was sworn into office on January 7, 2003. As Secretary of State, he is:
Improving elections, by bringing millions of dollars in federal election funds to Rhode Island to: develop a central voter registry so that we have updated and accurate voter lists at the polls on election day, recruit more poll workers so that every polling place is fully staffed, and ensure that every polling place in the state is accessible to voters with disabilities.

Making it easier for small businesses to get started by consolidating the dozens of application forms needed to get state licenses and permits into a single ?master application?.

Promoting open and accountable government with new legislation requiring all state and local public meeting notices and agendas to be posted electronically with the Secretary of State?s office. This will allow the office to establish ?The Electronic Town Crier?, a customized e-mail alert system to inform people about upcoming public meetings.

Saving taxpayer money by cutting government operating expenses and reducing costs for personnel, cellular telephones and printing.
