Info | William Delany "Bill" "Swack" Swackhamer
William Swackhamer was one of Nevada's most distinguished Secretaries of State and a longtime Nevada State Legislator. He was born in Winnemucca, August 18, 1914, to Edward O. and Mary D. Swackhamer. He attended school in Battle Mountain and joined his father in the family business in 1931.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II in September 1942 and served in the heavy bombardment group in the Mediterranean theater until discharged in July, 1946.
He was selected to the Nevada Assembly in the same year and served continuously to 1972. He was elected Speaker five times, served a Majority Leader, Chairman of the Cow County Caucus, Ways and Means, Taxation, etc.
He was appointed Secretary of State on January 11, 1973, by Governor Mike O'Callaghan to replace John Koontz who retired because of poor health.
In 1949 he was married to Joyce Backes and the couple had two children, Rebecca and Lloyd.
He served on the Board of Examiners, Board of County Commissioners, and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.
