InfoCouncil Member Lillian Hunter is a naturalized citizen who came to this country from Denmark with non-English speaking parents 49 years ago. Their first home was in Tacoma’s South End, where Council Member Hunter currently lives. She attended Baker Junior High and graduated from Mount Tahoma High School. She earned her undergraduate degree at The Evergreen State College – Tacoma and a Master’s in Education followed by a post-graduate certificate in Executive Educational Leadership from City University.

Council Member Hunter’s career has taken her from private business to public service. She has first-hand knowledge of the operations of a small business and the powerful impact of local government of enhancing success for these entrepreneurs. As a teacher at Lincoln High School and as a high school administrator at Lincoln High School, Wilson High School and Oakland Alternative High School, she had the privilege of working with some of the finest individuals in our city – our youth. She is very aware of the struggles of their families and neighborhoods. She recently retired from the Office Superintendent of Public Instruction, where she was the Director of Alternative Learning for Washington State. In both the public and private sectors, she learned the valuable lessons of compassion, collaboration, accountability and integrity.

Council Member Hunter has a long history of volunteer and community service including Bates Technical College Board of Trustees and two terms as trustee at the Tacoma Public Library. She is now ready to continue this commitment to public service as a member of the Tacoma City Council.
