InfoJudge Sharon Gilbert Yates was elected to the Bench in November 1992, becoming the third woman to sit on an Alabama appellate court and the first to sit on the Court of Civil Appeals.

She attended the University of Alabama, receiving her bachelor's degree in 1975 and a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Administration in 1976. She worked in Washington, D.C., for the Office of Education on the planning staff for the Bureau of Post-Secondary Education from 1975 to 1978. She returned to Alabama in 1978 and worked as an Educational Programmer for the Southeast Regional Resource Center, a federally-funded program based at Auburn University at Montgomery.

As a law student at the University of Alabama School of Law, Judge Yates served as a summer clerk for Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice C. C. Torbert, Jr. Following graduation in 1982, she served as staff attorney for Alabama Supreme Court Associate Justice Sam A. Beatty. In 1984, she entered the private practice of law and in May 1989, she became a full-time professor of law at Jones Law School, also maintaining a limited private practice until her election to the Bench.

Judge Yates serves on the Board of Directors for the Alabama Lawyers for Children and Child Protect, Inc. She serves as vice-chair of the Alabama Supreme Court's Alternative Dispute Resolution Commission and is a member of The Family Preservation Court Improvement Project. Judge Yates also serves on the Alice M. Meadows Council Bar Participation Committee and the Alabama Task Force on Judicial Elections. She served on the Third Citizen's Conference on Alabama State Courts.
