Info | Professional background: nominated by President George W. Bush as Commissioner of Administration for Native Americans, Department of Health and Human Services (withdrew to run for office); executive director, Urban Indian Health Council; executive director, Navajo Nation's Washington, D.C., office; tribal liaison officer, New Mexico Department of Children, Youth, and Families
Public service background: An articulate educator, Sharon explains to Indian people why the values they most cherish, and the public policy goals they seek, are embodied in the Republican Party. The complaints Indians have against the federal government are rooted in long-standing Democrat policies. It was President Richard Nixon who ended 150 years of debate with the stroke of a pen, recognizing the rights of Indian people to self-determination and control of their own destiny.
Education background: bachelor's degree, education, Eastern New Mexico University; master's degree, social work, University of Pennsylvania; advanced studies, special education and administration, University of New Mexico
Family: divorced; one adult daughter
Federation membership: San Juan RW
Top three issues: "Fighting for Honest Elections" means making it easier for people to vote and harder to cheat. The first step is to require some form of ID from voters. New Mexico is unique among the states because it is illegal here to ask a voter under any circumstances for any verification of their claimed identity. Other key issues include getting nationally-certified voting machines in every county, aggressive outreach to American Indian people, training poll workers and election officials, and educating voters about their rights and responsibilities. New Mexico was on the heels of Florida during the 2000 elections in voting irregularities, missing votes and questionable tabulations.
What I hope to accomplish: To make the New Mexico elections process a model for the nation; repair the mismanagement of the office budget; overhaul the election code, which hasn't been reviewed in decades; and, win public support for basic reforms.
