Rafael Ángel Calderón Fournier became president of the Republic of Costa Rica under the Social-Christian Unity Party in May 1990. He was a presidential candidate in the two previous elections. He was president of the party from 1983 to 1984. From May 1978 to July 1980, Mr. Calderón was minister of foreign relations.
Rafael Ángel Calderón Fournier was born on March 14, 1949. He attended the University of Costa Rica in San Jose and became an attorney-at-law and notary public. He was also a member of the Costa Rican Bar Association. Mr. Calderón has received numerous honors from countries throughout the Latin American region. His father was Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia, who was president from 1940 to 1944.
After a corruption scandal, of which he was thought to be the mastermind, he was incarcerated in October 2004.
