Info | The Honorable Frank M. Gilliam Jr. was sworn into office, as Mayor of Atlantic City, on January 1, 2018.
Highly regarded for his upright, enthusiastic and no-nonsense leadership style, Mayor Gilliam was previously elected as a Councilman-At-Large for the City of Atlantic City beginning in 2008.
Mayor Gilliam was born and raised in Atlantic City and is a proud product of the public school system. The Mayor attended Stockton University where he obtained a BA in criminal justice and was recently honored by Stockton University with an award for Professional Achievement. He continued his education at the University of San Francisco obtaining a Masters in social work.
Mayor Gilliam believes that the youth are our greatest asset. One of the ways to invest in that asset is through educational and mentorship programs. He has been a volunteer basketball coach for over 20 years, member of Connecting-the-Dots Inc., which is a non-profit organization that hosts community events such as college tours and financial aid seminars, and is strong proponent of the Gateway Day Care Center Project. The Mayor is also a member of Books without Borders, a non-profit organization that addresses the need for educational materials in third world countries. His program, Atlantic City Starz Basketball Club which targets city youth, helps to develop the fundamentals of the game, teaches sportsmanship, promotes academics, participation in community service, and the need for etiquette programs both on and off the court.
In addition to his role as a youth mentor, Mayor Gilliam is also passionate about our environment. As a resident and newly elected Mayor to the barrier island where Atlantic City is located, he recognizes the larger role that we play in our surrounding ecosystem. While a member of City Council he sponsored an ordinance that imposes a fine for any helium balloon which is released outdoors in Atlantic City. Due to his efforts, the ordinance was adopted by the City and Atlantic City was recognized by PETA, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, with the Compassionate City Award.
As a small business owner, member of the Board of Directors for the Greater Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Board of Directors for the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, Mayor Gilliam understands the issues facing both large and small businesses. Over the course of his political career, the Mayor has sponsored multiple initiatives to help spur development within Atlantic City. Such initiatives include the first non-casino beach lease for Bungalow Beach Bar, the Gateway Project which is a public/private partnership bringing both Stockton University and South Jersey Industries to the City, and the construction of new assisted living facilities for our seniors by RPM Development Group. Mayor Gilliam also sits on the Policy Board for the South Jersey Transportation Planning Organization.
Mayor Frank M. Gilliam Jr. resides in Atlantic City with his family.
