InfoBefore being elected Lt. Governor, Sally Pederson served as a forceful advocate on education and state and federal legislation for children with special needs. In her role as Lt. Governor, she continues to do so. She now serves as the lead of the Vilsack/Pederson team on workforce, disability, and human service issues for the state. She also leads the Vilsack/Pederson Administrations efforts to achieve insurance parity for those with mental illness and substance abuse.

She chaired the Governor's 21st Century Workforce Council, and currently serves as chair of the board of directors of Iowa Jobs for America's Graduates (IJAG), part of a national initiative focused on helping those students most likely to drop out of school to graduate and become successfully employed.

Sally Pederson also is a strong advocate for volunteerism, and, since coming into office in January, 1999, has committed to volunteering each week, helping in various capacities throughout the state. Her volunteer work is focused on education, healthcare, and human services. She is the honorary chair of the new Iowa Mentoring Partnership, a public-private coalition designed to encourage more Iowans to become mentors to our youth.

Sally grew up in Vinton, Iowa. She is a graduate of Iowa State University. After graduation, she worked for Meredith corporation until 1984, when she decided to spend more time at home with her son, Ronald, who was later diagnosed with autism.

Since then, Sally has devoted much of her time to community service on the local, state and national levels. She served as President of Polk County Health Services. She has served as board president for the Autism Society of Iowa, and was the founding president of The Homestead Living and Learning Center for Adults with Autism. She also has served on the board of directors of Blank Children's Hospital, The Des Moines Playhouse, Very Special Arts Iowa, YWCA Aliber Child Care Center, the YMCA, the Mid-Iowa Health Foundation, and the State Special Education Advisory Panel. She currently serves on the board of directors for the National Alliance for Autism Research, the Capital Campaign for Iowa's Special Olympics, and Legacy 150.

Sally and her husband, James Autry, also have two grown sons, Jim, Jr. and Rick, and two grandchildren
