Info | Don Sherer was elected to the state House of Representatives in November 2002, from the 147th District of Stamford and New Canaan, following long service to the City of Stamford.
Rep. Sherer was a City Representative in Stamford for 15 years, was elected to the Board leadership for six years and served as Chairman of Charter Revision, Land Use and Environmental Protection and Parks and Recreation committees. For the past two years, Sherer had been an advisor to the Connecticut General Assembly's Law Revision Commission. In 1998, Governor John Rowland appointed Sherer as Stamford Harbormaster. A veteran, he served as a Senior Petty Officer in the United States Coast Guard Reserve performing Search and Rescue duties.
A graduate of Rippowam High School (1965) and the University of Connecticut (B.A. Political Science, 1969) and awarded for his academic excellence at Brooklyn Law School (Juris Doctor, 1974), Sherer is a well-known attorney in Stamford. He is a member of the Bar in Connecticut and New York, as well as on a Federal and Supreme Court level. As a fellow of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys, Don has achieved recognition for his work in adoption law and assisted reproductive technology law. His proposal for new adoption law became the law of Connecticut in 1986.
A champion of low taxes and less government, Sherer is committed to local control over local issues and has a lifetime belief in well-funded quality education and early literacy. His role as Stamford's Harbormaster has only strengthened his commitment to open space and a pristine environment ?? important elements in lower Fairfield County's quality of life.
In addition, Sherer believes that new and innovative solutions to the region's traffic congestion, including use of rail and waterways, must be pursued. He has drafted legislation now the law of the State of Connecticut, and has been asked to appear before legislative committees' public hearings as an expert witness. Sherer has a working relationship with State lawmakers and leaders. His general goal is to utilize his experience, problem solving and leadership skills and constituent servicing ability to represent the needs and positions of the District in the State Legislature. Don lives in Stamford with his wife, Shelley, and they have two grown children, Jennifer and Eric.
