Labriola graduated from Yale University in 1982. He was elected Vice-Chairman of the Yale College Republicans and was a member of the tennis team. During his college years, he campaigned on behalf of his father, Dr. Gerald Labriola, who was elected State Senator from Naugatuck.

Labriola graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1985. There he co-founded the law school chapter of the Federalist Society political group. While attending law school, he worked as an investigator at the State of Connecticut Victim's Services Commission, assisting victims of crime. He was also student manager of the law school bookstore, and he interned at the Economic Crime Unit of the Chief State's Attorney's Office.

Following law school, Labriola served as the political director of his father's gubernatorial campaign of 1985-6. After passing the Connecticut Bar Exam in 1986, he was a temporary assistant clerk at the Waterbury Superior Court. He then joined the law offices of Ralph Crozier in Oxford, where he worked as an associate attorney in 1987 and 1988.

Labriola was appointed as an alternate to the Naugatuck Planning Commission, filling an unexpired term in 1987. He was then elected Chairman of the Naugatuck Republican Town Committee, a position he held from 1988 to 1991. During his tenure, the first Republican Mayor of Naugatuck in sixteen years, John Letts, was elected. From 1988 to 1990, David was an associate attorney at the Law Offices of N. Warren Hess in Naugatuck.

From 1990 to 1993, Labriola operated his solo law practice in Naugatuck. He served as a Naugatuck Police Commissioner from 1991 to 1993, when he was a leading advocate for the new Police Station. In 1993, he and his brother, Attorney Gerald Labriola, Jr., formed the law firm of Labriola and Labriola in Naugatuck. David Labriola was appointed Naugatuck Borough Attorney in 1995, for a two-year term.
