| Info | Kurt Fowler grew up near the intersection of Henderson, Hancock and McDonough counties on a family farm, where his mother still lives. He worked at Maytag in Galesburg for 21 years, starting out on the assembly line and ended his career there in maintenance. He was one of the final seven union workers when it closed in 2005. While at Maytag he attended Carl Sandburg College and Monmouth College. After the closing, he earned his Masters and Teaching Certificate at Western Illinois University. He is currently in his 6th year of teaching in the Monmouth-Roseville School District.
Fowler's background makes him an ideal candidate to represent the 47th district. He has lived in this area his whole life. Growing up on a farm, he understands the family farmer and the struggles that they face. When Maytag closed and moved some production to Mexico, it was a critical time in his family's life. Fowler's family ended up on Food Stamps and Medicaid as he went back to school to get his Masters degree, and teaching Certification. He knows firsthand the impact of job loss, as businesses leave the state and country. There are so few of these types of jobs left in Illinois. Fowler does not want to see another business leave our area. As a teacher and as a parent, he has seen both sides of the education system. The financial burden school districts face which have led to curriculum, staff, and extra-curricular cuts. This has led to larger class sizes and fewer education opportunities for our students. School districts are owed money by the state, and that amount keeps increasing. There is a huge discrepancy in public education funding. Fowler has two children in college at State Universities. The State colleges budgets are under extreme pressure. There are many college students and families who depend on the MAP Grant to pay for college.
Fowler and his wife of 27 years have four children. He believes that he has a pretty thorough understanding of the problems that the 47th Legislative District faces. Voters should always have a choice, they can now chose to write-in Kurt Fowler.
