InfoBen Bartlett is the inheritor of generations of triumph and struggle in Alameda County. His family can trace its roots in Alameda County to a time when people who looked like Ben couldn’t live in certain neighborhoods, seek certain professions, or even be seen in certain communities after dark.

“I was raised to believe this community–no matter the heartbreak and strife–is a place of promise and opportunity. Our problems are not unique to our County; if we help people here, we help people everywhere. It just takes vision, courage, and a community of purpose.”

Ben grew up surrounded by community organizers and leaders, like his uncle Congressman Ron Dellums, and his father Dayle Bartlett. He learned from an early age the value of community and the necessity of progress.

Ben was inspired to study environmental law while working for the Obama campaign. He worked on major initiatives like helping launch Cap and Trade in California and designing electric vehicle finance programs. He has gone headlong into the innovation economy where he helps people with diverse backgrounds create and start businesses. During this time, Ben found the love of his life Yelda, also an attorney and advocate. They are now raising a daughter in Berkeley whose favorite color is “sparkly rainbow”.

Eight years ago, the trajectory of Ben’s life would change forever. His mother and her neighbors were displaced from their senior home. When he found out that the waitlist for senior housing was over a decade, he knew he had to do something. It was clear that for Ben, there was no other path than public service.

Ben ran for Berkeley City Council in South Berkeley in 2016 and won. In 2020, with the support of all of his colleagues on the City Council, Ben was re-elected with nearly 70% of the vote.

Ben is a nationally recognized policy leader, known for his collaborative and effective leadership style, focusing on innovation and inclusion. This is why he has been able to pass over 100 pieces of legislation in Berkeley, improving the lives of its residents. We need Ben’s visionary leadership to unlock the promise of Alameda County for all of us.
