Born 7/26/1836 in Andover OH, the daughter of Theodore L. & Augusta (Bettes) Wade. She was the niece of U.S. Senator Benjamin F. Wade (Frank Leslie's illustrated Newspaper, 12/5/1868).
Married Schuyler Colfax on 11/18/1868. They met after Colfax's nomination for VP while she was one of a party travelling through Colorado.
After her death on 3/4/1911, the Colfax family home was sold. Schuyler Colfax's vast library was divided, with one large chunk going to the Northern Indiana Historical Society (over 1,000 histories and printed congressional documents), one chunk going to the South Bend Training School (about 300 books on educational topics), and another chunk going to their son Schuyler Colfax Jr. (the literary works), who lived in Rochester NY.
