InfoMariette Rheiner Garner, known as "Ettie," was the wife of John Nance Garner.

She was a daughter of Peter Rheiner, a Swiss immigrant who moved to California in search of gold but instead became a Texas rancher and his first wife, the former Mary Elizabeth Watson, who died in Ettie's youth. Ettie grew up in a log house on the ranch. She attended schools in Vermont and Tennessee.

On 11/25/1895, she married Garner in the Christian Church in Sabinal, Texas. They had one child, a son, Tully Charles Garner (1896—1968). While it had been reported that Ettie had been a candidate for county judge against John Garner before their marriage, Ettie told a news reporter in 1940 that she never ran against him.

During her husband's tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, from 1903 to 1933, Ettie Garner served as his private secretary and office manager. During her time in Washington, Ettie became known as John Garner's "right hand man." She installed a kitchenette in his office, and just before he took office as Vice President, a visitor stole the couple's famous coffee percolator.

She suffered from Parkinson's disease from 1942 until 1948 and died in their home in Uvalde TX on 8/17/1948 after being in a coma for two days.
