Info | HAMMOND, Winfield Scott, a Representative from Minnesota; born in Southboro, Worcester County, Mass., November 17, 1863; attended the public schools and was graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., in 1884; moved to Minnesota and settled in Madelia, Watonwan County; principal in the public schools; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1891 and commenced practice in St. James, Minn.; prosecuting attorney of Watonwan County in 1895 and 1896 and again from 1900 to 1905; member of the State board of normal school directors 1896-1900; elected as a Democrat to the Sixtieth and to the three succeeding Congresses; was not a candidate for reelection in 1914 to the Sixty-fourth Congress; served from March 4, 1907, until he resigned January 6, 1915, having been elected governor; governor of Minnesota from January 5, 1915, until his death while on a visit to Clinton, La., December 30, 1915; interment in Mount Hope Cemetery, St. James, Minn.
