General in the Union Army during the Civil War; member of Minnesota state senate 16th District, 1872-75; Governor of Minnesota, 1882-87; delegate to Republican National Convention from Minnesota, 1896; member of Republican National Committee from Minnesota, 1896; general in the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War. Member, Grand Army of the Republic; Loyal Legion; Freemasons. Died February 5, 1913. Burial location unknown. Hubbard County, Minn. is named for him.
