InfoLaurie-Anne Sayles is running for Congress because she believes it's time our government works for us. Laurie-Anne, the youngest child of a veteran and a social worker, learned early on that anything is possible with hard work and dedication to service.

As a mother raising her daughter alone, Laurie-Anne Sayles put herself through college, built a career in public health, and became a trailblazer as the first Black woman elected to the Gaithersburg City Council and At-Large to the Montgomery County Council.

Laurie-Anne's journey is a testament to the values instilled by her parents. Her mother, a retired Montgomery County social worker, and her father, a veteran and retired Oncology Nurse, inspired Laurie-Anne to embark on a path of public service.

Laurie-Anne earned her Bachelor of Science in Public Health from the University of Maryland, College Park. She furthered her education with a Master of Public Administration from the University of Baltimore, where she received a graduate fellowship at the Schaeffer Center for Public Policy.

Laurie-Anne's career in public health and community service exemplifies her commitment to the well-being of others. From her role as a Health Program Manager at the Food and Drug Administration to her tenure as a Public Health Educator at the National Institutes of Health, she fought for expanded access to early childhood education and affordable healthcare.

In 2017, Laurie-Anne made history as the first Black person elected to the Gaithersburg City Council. Nominated as Vice President in 2020, she continued breaking barriers. The Daily Record recognized her work and named her one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women. She Chaired the National League of Cities Community and Economic Development (CED) Committee and served on its Board of Directors, where her peers recognized her as Legislator of the Year during the most challenging time in our nation’s history.

Laurie-Anne's dedication to public service led her to declare in June 2021 that she would run for an At-Large seat on the Montgomery County Council, unveiling her S.M.A.R.T agenda—strengthening public education, affordable housing, sustainable food production, economic revitalization, and tackling climate change.

On December 5, 2022, Laurie-Anne was inaugurated onto the Montgomery County Council, marking a historic moment as one of six female Councilmembers contributing to a majority-women body for the first time. After a year in office, she has fought for bills to provide equal rights, increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour, and create a cleaner, safer environment for Montgomery County residents.

In Congress, Laurie-Anne will continue fighting for our families and a government that works for everyone, not just the privileged few. With her family, friends, and community by her side, Laurie-Anne inspires change, proving that anything is possible with resilience and a commitment to service.
