FAST FACTS:
Noyes was a lawyer by training.

When the Civil War started, Noyes helped organize the 39th Ohio Infantry Regiment. He served as a major in the unit, ultimately being promoted to colonel. On July 4th, 1864, he received a wound at Ruff's Mill that resulted in the amputation of his left leg.

As governor, Noyes pushed for coal mine inspection laws, and promoted fish conservation.

Noyes was a strong supporter of Rutherford Hayes for president. President Hayes appointed him minister to France in 1877.
