| Info | Steve Benjamin is a practicing attorney in Columbia, South Carolina, he also serves as an assistant prosecutor in South Carolina's 4th Judicial Circuit. Mr. Benjamin was appointed by South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges as Director of the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services on January 12, 1999 and unanimously confirmed by the South Carolina Senate on March 2, 1999.
He served as Chief Executive of the 950-employee, $43 million law enforcement agency charged with supervising the over 35,000 persons placed on probation by the courts or parole by the Parole Board. The Director has overall responsibility for the Department, supervises all staff functions, and ensures that all policies and procedures of the Department are followed. He resigned his Cabinet appointment on September 1, 2001.
Prior to accepting this post, Mr. Benjamin served as Regional Manager of Public Affairs for I nternational Paper Company, where he managed the company's legislative and public affairs activities in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia.
Prior to joining International Paper, he was Manager of Corporate Affairs at Carolina Power & Light Company, and was associated with the prominent McNair Law Firm in Columbia, SC, where his practice emphasized legislative, health care, and state procurement matters.
Steve Benjamin received his Bachelors Degree in Political Science from the University of South Carolina in 1991, and his J.D. Degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1994. While attending USC he was involved in numerous extracurricular activities. He served as Student Government President and as President of the Student Bar Association in the School of Law.
He was named a co recipient of the 2001 Young Lawyer of the Year by the South Carolina Bar Association and is a recipient of the 2000 Compleat Lawyer Award given by the University of South Carolina School of Law.
In 1999 the National Bar Association named him the National Young Lawyer of the Year and the University of South Carolina recognized him as Young Alumni of the Year. He is the recipient of the Lincoln C. Jenkins, Jr. Award given by the Columbia (SC) Urban League for accomplishments as a young professional and was featured as one of Ebony Magazine's 30 Leaders of the Future.
Steve Benjamin's community leadership experiences are extensive. Currently, he sits on the Bank of America Columbia/Lexington Advisory Board and on the Board of Directors for the American Diabetes Association-South Carolina chapter. He recently resigned as President-Elect of the State Agency Directors Organization, has served as a Commissioner on the City of Columbia Planning Commission (1995-1997), on the Board of Directors of the Columbia Urban League (1996-1997), as well as on the Board of Directors of Sistercare, Inc., an organization dedicated to serving and assisting abused women and their children (1995-1997.) He served as a member of the University of South Carolina Board of Visitors, the USC Young Alumni Board; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Columbia; and as a Mentor for Richland County (SC) School District One. He is currently on the Board of Directors for United Way of the Midlands and served as the 2001 State Government Campaign Chairman.
He's also served as a member of the South Carolina Bar House of Delegates, SC Bar Law Week Committee Chairman as a member of the South Carolina Sentencing Guidelines Commission, and on the S.C. Law Enforcement Training Advisory Council
He currently serves on the University of South Carolina School of Law Partnership Board and the USC College of Liberal Arts, National Advisory Council. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and St. John Baptist Church in Columbia.
