NC Senate (D-Wake) 1842-1843; defeated William H. Haywood for the nomination. Fayette Observer, 4/6/1842.

Candidate for Governor (D-NC) 1846. Defeated Walter F. Leake at the Democratic state convention in a contested vote. Leake initially ran as an Independent but was convinced to withdraw before the election took place.

Shepherd was the most prominent Democrat in North Carolina to join the Know Nothing movement in 1855 (Charlotte Observer, 7/25/1915). After the collapse of the Know Nothing movement, Shepherd withdrew from politics North Carolinian, 6/29/1871). He lived in Europe a few years after the end of the Civil War (Tarborough Southerner, 6/22/1871).
