Info“Gen. Gideon J. Pillow, of Mexican War notoriety, and Brigadier-General in the Confederate service, died of congestion of the brain this morning (10/8/1878), at his residence on the mouth of the … Francis River.

“Gideon Johnson Pillow was born in Tennessee on [6/8/1806] and graduated from Nashville University in his twenty-first year. Soon afterward, he began to practice law at Columbia, Tenn. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention at Baltimore, in 1844, which nominated Polk for the Presidency.

“He was made a Brigadier-General of volunteers on the breaking out of the Mexican War in 1846, and after serving under Gen. Taylor, was ordered to join Scott at Vera Cruz. He commanded the right wing at the battle of Cerro Gordo, and was wounded. Soon afterward he was made Major-General. He took part with Scott in the battles of Churubusco, Chapultepec, and Milino del Roy.

“When the war closed, Gen. Pillow was arrested upon charges of insubordination made by Gen. Scott, and was tried by court-martial and acquitted, after which he resumed the practice of the law.

“He became a rebel on the secession of South Carolina, commanded at the battle of Belmont Mo., [11/7/1861], and was second in command under Gen. Floyd at the battle of Ft. Donelson, 02/1862. Floyd refused to perform the act of surrendering, and handed over the command to Pillow, who made it over the Buckner, who surrendered the fort. Floyd and Pillow escaping, with a portion of their men. Pillow was subsequently relieved of command, and served under Beauregard in the South-west. His most notable military achievement was the digging of a trench in the wrong place at Saltillo, during the Mexican War. Pillow was a man of sauve manners and strictly temperate habits.”
