InfoI am a native son of the 13th District, born in Garden City and raised in Wayne and Westland. My wife Sherri is a middle school teacher and we have been married for 18 years. We live in Westland with our three children and dog, Eli.

My dad was an auto worker at the Wayne Truck Assembly plant and my mom stayed home to raise me and my three siblings. Like many families in today’s 13th District, they worked hard to get ahead, hoping for a better life for their children.

My parents divorced when I was 10. I lived with my dad in a diverse neighborhood that taught me a lot about really how similar we all are. My dad eventually started a small auto recycling business and by his example, I learned the principles of hard work and perseverance through tough times.

Aside from my mom, there are three women who have had a profound effect on my life. I spent a lot of time with my two grandmothers, who were feminists in their own way. They told me stories of what it was like to struggle for civil rights and equality, impressing upon me the importance of fairness and justice. They were ahead of their time, being entrepreneurs and bread-winners in their own right. They were teachers of lessons I would have likely otherwise never learned.

Another influence in my life comes from the family of my best friend Dan, who lived across the street from me when I was growing up. While my dad was working long hours, I had the great fortune of spending a lot of time with Dan’s family after school—they were my village. From Mrs. B’s family, I learned a lot about compassion, community, family and, most importantly, awesome home-cooked food!

Collectively, all of that made me the person I am today. Those wonderful people instilled in me the love of family, the spirit of entrepreneurship, the confidence to accept my calling to public service, and the moral compass to do it well.

In 1999, I was encouraged to get active in public service and was appointed to the planning commission. In 2001, I successfully ran for city council and served for six years until my colleagues appointed me Mayor when the seat became vacant. I am now serving my third term as full-time Mayor.

As our city has grown increasingly diverse, I’ve learned so much in the job about meeting people’s needs, serving a community, growing the pie, and providing opportunity for all. But at the end of each day, when I head home to my family, I remember the lessons I learned: hard work, straight shooting, and always remembering your roots are the keys to success.

After Congressman John Conyers resigned from Congress in 2017, I announced my candidacy to be the Democratic nominee for the 13th District seat. I know how to “connect the dots” between our local communities and federal government and will focus on bringing resources back home to improve everyday life. I will bring to every family in the 13th district a personal commitment to hands-on public service and integrity that have been the hallmark of my nearly 20 years of service to Westland.
