Infoborn in Chepultepec (now Allgood), Blount County, Ala., February 22, 1878; attended the common schools of his native county and was graduated from the State Normal College at Florence, Ala., in 1898; taught school in Blount County; tax assessor of Blount County, Ala., 1900-1909; member of the State Democratic executive committee 1908-1910; Blount County agricultural demonstration agent 1910-1913; State auditor of Alabama 1914-1918; State commissioner of agriculture and industries 1918-1922; elected as a delegate at large from Alabama to the Democratic National Convention at San Francisco in 1920; elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-eighth Congress and to the five succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1923-January 3, 1935); chairman, Committee on War Claims (Seventy-second and Seventy-third Congresses); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1934; served as a member of the Farm Security Administration from September 4, 1935, until he retired on December 1, 1943; made an unsuccessful campaign for State treasurer in 1954; retired; died in Fort Payne, Ala., March 4, 1977; interment in Valley Head Cemetery, Valley Head, Ala.
