Info | homas Day has a rich resume of leadership experience in the military and the private sector.
Tom is an Iraq war veteran. He enlisted into the Army as a senior in college, only weeks after 9/11. He served five years in the Army’s 101st Airborne Division, including one year in Iraq. Tom and his unit were a part of the initial wave of soldiers that crossed into Iraq during the March, 2003 invasion.
He also served in humanitarian aid operations in Mississippi and New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. In 2007, Tom authored “Along the Tigris: The 101st Airborne Division in Operation Iraqi Freedom,” a historical account of his division’s 2003-2004 tour in Iraq.
Tom was a journalist for several years after his military career. He was a bureau correspondent in Afghanistan in 2009 and 2010, and his work has been published in national and international publications, including the Washington Post and CNN.com. Tom has also provided on-air commentary for CNN on several news stories.
Last year Tom teamed up with two other Iraq war veterans to create The Bunker, a nonprofit business community dedicated to supporting veteran entrepreneurs and veteran small business owners. The Bunker serves more than 20 veteran-owned businesses in Chicago, and has launched affiliate locations in four additional cities. Every day at The Bunker, veteran entrepreneurs are scrapping for every inch of ground as they take on some of the biggest names in every industry.
Tom is a graduate of Penn State University and holds master’s degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago. He has also been a member of the Truman National Security Project‘s Defense Council, and has been a fellow with the New Leaders Council. Tom is active in his American Legion Post, and sits on the board of directors of The Bunker and Veterans Housing and Employment Assistance.
Tom seeks to leverage all of these experiences to fight to rebuild the middle class, expand opportunities for small businesses and entrepreneurs, end mass incarceration, support a strong and smart national defense strategy, and ensure that decisions made in Washington are made for the benefit of all of us — not just special interests and the wealthy.
