InfoRepresentative Christopher G. Donovan represents the 84th Assembly District of Meriden. He was first elected to the Connecticut General Assembly in 1992. He is a member of the Appropriations and Public Health Committee and a member of the Government, Administration, and Elections Committee.

Representative Donovan continues to be a key sponsor of health care reform legislation, and has worked for passage of Connecticut's Managed Care Patients' Bill of Rights, the mandatory 48 hour maternity stay, as well as the expansion of health care for children and their parents through the creation of the HUSKY program.

This year, Representative Donovan is working to:

increase prescription coverage to our elderly by fighting attempts to limit the ConnPACE program

make health care more affordable to small businesses and families

allow families time from work, with pay, to care for new children, parental illnesses, family emergencies

enact campaign finance reform

provide more assistance to people with mental illnesses

keep our environment safe

provide scholarships to state and community colleges for all qualifying students

provide State funding for Community Police

As House Chair of the Labor and Public Employees Committee, Representative Donovan led the efforts in the House for an increased minimum wage from $6.70 to $6.90 on January 1, 2003 and a second raise to $7.10 in the year 2004. He proposed and passed legislation to lower the hours a school-aged teen can work while in school from 48 hours per week to 32 hours per week. Rep. Donovan won passage of the Standard Wage Act, a law that requires State contractors to pay janitors and food service workers a living wage.

He has proposed legislation to expand health care opportunities for working families, assist with job education and preparation, and provide working families with adequate job opportunities and decent wages and benefits.

He received the Child Advocacy Legislative Leadership Award in 1993, named Humanitarian of the Year in 1996, and NASW's Legislator of the Year in 1997. In 1997 Chris was recognized by Connecticut Coalition of Police and Correction Officers for his dedicated support of Law Enforcement Officers and their families. He received recognition for his support in the creation of the Office of Multicultural Health Office Legislation in 1998. Capitol Community College recognized him as an honorary member of Phi Theta Kappa, an International Honor Society. In 2000, The Connecticut State Council of Machinists presented Chris with the Outstanding Commitment Award.

He is currently a member of the University of Connecticut School of Social Work Advisory Committee. He is a former member of the Connecticut Family Leave Task Force.

Chris earned his Bachelor Degree in Biology at Villanova University and his Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Connecticut School of Social Work in 1980. He is a Labor Representative with the Congress of CT Community Colleges and teaches part-time at the University of Hartford. He formerly worked for the Connecticut Citizen's Action Group where he worked on environmental, energy and housing issues. He also worked for the Service Employees International Union on day care, family leave, and pay equity issues.

Chris lives with his wife, Elaine Gallen Donovan, who is a Psychiatric Nurse Specialist, A.P.R.N., his son Aaron, age 22, and his daughter Sarah, age 11.
