InfoSince taking office on June 7, 2018, Faisal Hassan has been a strong voice for the people of York South–Weston.

A former broadcaster and published author with deep ties to the community, Faisal is a proud York South–Weston resident who previously served on the boards of the Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation (CERA), Habitat for Humanity and the Weston King Neighbourhood Centre.  He is also a founding member of the Ontario NDP Black Caucus and made history twice – both as part of this groundbreaking collection of MPPs and as the first ever Somali-Canadian elected to the Ontario Legislature.

Over the last four years he has been a fierce advocate for the riding and fought especially hard for us during the pandemic. When Doug Ford and the government were slow to act, Faisal went to work, making sure our community got better access to vaccines and testing, that small businesses got their share of provincial funding, and worked with community partners to help stop unfair evictions.

Throughout his term as MPP, Faisal made sure the issues facing York South-Weston were front and centre at Queen’s Park: standing up for front line and essential workers, working for better health care and seniors care, and fighting to bring down the cost of living. He stood shoulder-to-shoulder with families torn apart by gun violence, calling on the province to address root causes like poverty and to let big cities ban handgun and ammo sales. Driven by the belief that housing is a human right, Faisal has been a strong voice for real rent control and ending above guideline rent increases, and pushed for a moratorium on residential and commercial evictions during the pandemic.

We can’t afford another four years of Doug Ford and can’t count on Steven Del Duca to fix what the Liberals broke. Faisal and the NDP are stronger than ever and ready to form a government that focuses on the things that matter to York South–Weston.
