William F. Weld is a principal at Leeds Weld & Co., a private equity firm based in New York. The firm focuses on investment opportunities in the area of for-profit education and training.
Prior to 2001, Mr. Weld was the partner in charge of the New York office of McDermott, Will & Emery, an international law firm with 900 attorneys and 12 offices worldwide.
As Governor of Massachusetts from 1991 to 1997, Mr. Weld was credited with improving the business climate in Massachusetts by reducing taxes and state regulations on business. He was an active supporter of the education reform movement and served as national co-chair of the Privatization Council. He led trade missions to China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, Canada, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, India, South Africa, Israel, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Prior to becoming Governor, Mr. Weld served as Assistant U.S. Attorney General in charge of the Criminal Division of the United States Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. (1986-1988) and as the United States Attorney for Massachusetts during the Reagan administration (1981-1986). He practiced law for 13 years in Boston, concentrating in securities and antitrust litigation.
Mr. Weld earned his bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, from Harvard College in 1966. He received his diploma in international economics from Oxford University, with distinction, in 1967. In 1970 he received his law degree, cum laude, from Harvard Law School.
Mr. Weld is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and of the Americas Society, and of various corporate boards including Affiliated Managers Group and IDT Corporation. He is the author of three novels published by Simon & Schuster, Mackerel by Moonlight (1998), Big Ugly (1999), and Stillwater (2002)
