InfoLAUTENBERG, Frank Raleigh, a Senator from New Jersey.

Born in Paterson, Passaic County, NJ, 1/23/1924; son of Polish and Russian Immigrants. Served in the United States Army Signal Corps 1942-1946; graduated Columbia University School of Business, New York City 1949; businessman; commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey 1978-1982

US Senate (D-NJ) 1982-2001. Elected in 1982 in campaign against Millicent Fenwick, then appointed on 12/27/1982 to complete the unexpired term of Nicholas F. Brady; chose not to run for reelection in 2000. His greatest accomplishment was banning smoking on airplane flights.

US Senate (D-NJ) 2003-2013. Lautenburg was called out of retirement to replace Senator Robert Torricelli on the 2002 ballot in violation of New Jersey law. Lautenburg went on to defeat Doug Forrester to return to the US Senate.
