Info | Hufnagel’s bachelors degree is in accounting (1976). Then she trained as an independent auditor, first being licensed in 1976 as a Certified Public Accountant. She managed audits in Pennsylvania and Florida, eventually rising to a senior manager in the national New York headquarters of Coopers & Lybrand. Her experience includes auditing banking, insurance, high-tech, cities and counties, including fraud audits. She began her career in Maryland by teaching at Coppin State in 1997, and currently is a professor at Anne Arundel Community College.
The Comptroller sits on a number of Boards, including the Board of Public Works. This includes setting contractual and environmental policies, exactly where the citizens of Maryland need a voice like Hufnagel’s with no corporate ties.
Hufnagel has been a political and social activist for thirty years. This ranges from being the treasurer of environmental and educational non-profits to volunteering for the Library for the Blind in Baltimore. She was a leader of the early 1990’s drive for employer recognition by the UAW affiliate at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She works with the Union of Concerned Scientists and in 2000 lobbied Congress against the politically-driven and ineffective National Missile Defense, based on her expertise in her current career as an astrophysics teacher.
