Tom was born in Rochester, N.Y., on Feb. 6, 1948 and lived there until his father was re-called to the Navy (as a pilot) during the Korean War. The family resided in Naples, Italy, Kansas, and Washington, D.C. before moving to Coral Gables, Florida in 1953, where his dad attended the University of Miami on the G.I. Bill. After his dad?s graduation, the family moved to the Bahamas, where Tom was home schooled, rode horses on a nearby cattle ranch, and enjoyed fishing and skin diving. While growing up in South Florida, Tom was active in sports and hunted and hiked in the Big Cypress Swamp, where he saw panthers in the wild. As a teenager, Tom worked construction for his dad as a laborer and carpenter building houses, and then as a computer programmer. He worked his way through law school as a waiter in a Gainesville restaurant.

Tom loves NASCAR, college football, fishing, hunting, and playing the harmonica. He has been married for 28 years to Martha C. Warner and they have three grown children.

Tom graduated from Coral Gables High School in 1966 and attended the University of Florida on a football scholarship, where he received a business degree in Finance and Investments, in 1970, and a law degree with Honors, in 1973.
